This portrait was taken on the roof of what was then Apple Corps’ Savile Row office, circa 1969-1970, the very same rooftop where the Beatles held their famous concert. Lennon asked David Nutter to take this portrait for the cover of a proposed book launch – a poetry book that would be the sequel to In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works. The book was never completed but Nutter kept this image, in which he had deliberately elongated John’s face “to make him look more like Jesus”.
